4 Speed vs. 5 Speed

I'm close to buying my first Savage (and the first bike I've had in 30 (gulp!!!) years). Looking at two used '96 four speeds, and a new '99 five speed. Any thoughts on the difference in riding characteristics? Is one better than the other?
